Why Matt and Stone Just Renamed South Park to South America

Trey Parker and Matt Stone don't know how to do subtle. Instead of ignoring the political climate, the creators of America's favorite small-town satire just pulled off another massive troll.

Ahead of its 29th season premiere on Comedy Central, the long-running animated show is officially changing its name to South America. If you've been paying attention to the news lately, you know exactly why.

The Joke Behind the New Name

President Donald Trump has spent recent months on a geographic renaming crusade. First came the push to alter the Gulf of Mexico into the "Gulf of America," followed by an executive order shifting Lake Ontario to "Lake America" for U.S. users on major mapping apps. Then came a social media push floating the idea of rebranding New Mexico as "New America".

Tech giants Apple and Google rolled over almost immediately, updating their digital maps to match the White House's preferred terminology. Parker and Stone noticed.

In a biting public statement announcing the season premiere, the creators didn't hold back.

"Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA," Parker and Stone announced.

They didn't stop at mocking Big Tech. The duo also took a direct shot at their own corporate overlords. Their statement included a special note of gratitude to parent company Paramount, labeling the newly merged entity "a Skydance Capitulation". It is a sharp jab at David Ellison's Skydance taking over the studio amid a wave of media industry consolidation and corporate buckling under political pressure.

Poking the Bear in Season Twenty-Nine

This stunt arrives right on the heels of the show winning a Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program. For years, the series has served as a primary cultural thorn in the side of the second Trump administration.

While other shows pull their punches or face sudden cancellations, Parker and Stone have continuously leaned into explicit, chaotic satire. Recent seasons featured the animated president in deeply unflattering storylines alongside Satan, pushing the boundaries of what corporate-backed cable and streaming services will allow.

Paramount executives might be sweating over the TV guide listings, but the creators are doubling down. When asked how long the rebrand would stick, they kept it simple: "We are 100% committed to SOUTH AMERICA".

Tune in on September 16 when the newly christened series drops its season premiere. Expect zero apologies.
